Job Summary

Under general supervision, The Network Engineer oversees all aspects of the implementation and management of networked information systems software and equipment/appliances. The position is responsible for researching, developing and implementing new systems and solutions that better fit the existing and future needs of the College community. This position also overlaps in many areas with Systems Engineering and therefore the Network Engineer needs a broad depth of knowledge.  The position requires a solid knowledge of Information Technology security principles. Due to the complicated, interconnected nature of the systems this position oversees, the position requires a significant level of independent judgment. In addition, the Network Engineer analyzes computer and network related problems reported by end users, diagnoses the most effective method to resolve problems and implements appropriate solutions.

Essential Responsibilities

Network and Server Support

  • Centrally manages systems and processes such as threat protection, backups and archives, and software updates;
  • Engineers and maintains network Infrastructure including physical layer, high-capacity circuits, VPN’s, routers, switches, and firewalls;
  • Administers Microsoft Active Directory including management of domain controllers, member servers, and group policy.
  • Supports ancillary devices, RAID arrays, UPS batteries, Wireless Access Points;
  • Supports legacy PBX systems and modern VoIP phone;
  • Develops and supports virtualization infrastructures and cloud solutions, both private and public;
  • Identify, troubleshoot and resolve problems encountered by College-wide users of various servers, vendor-hosted servers, windows based computers, College network infrastructure and other computer and communications technology;
  • Work with established vendors to coordinate infrastructure improvements and implement vendor-developed solutions;
  • Use tracking system to log requests, monitor progress, track problem resolution, identify patterns of failure, research bug fixes and implement solutions, communicate with IT Services leadership regarding unresolved problems;
  • Monitor the network for security related issues on hardware and software.
  • Perform related work as required.

Customer Service and Support

  • Train users in various software applications and network-related procedures;
  • Train users regarding information security and the safeguarding of intellectual property.


  • Develop and maintain comprehensive architecture maps depicting College physical and logical network infrastructure, assets and configuration.

Education and Experience

Education & Certification, Experience

  • Associate’s degree in Computer Sciences
  • Current Continuing Education in the Computer Sciences field
  • Experience in Higher Education preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Three to five years current experience providing technical network support in a multi-platform and multi-operating system environment;
  • Experience with the design, implementation and maintenance of virtual desktops in a datacenter hosted environment;
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining local area and wide area networks;
  • Network and computer troubleshooting and problem solving skills are required, including knowledge of networking theory, principles and practices;
  • Specific knowledge of TCP/IP, UDP, Layer 3 VLANs and other network protocols;
  • Application support experience with Active Directory, Microsoft SQL Server and anti-virus/anti-malware protection products and services;
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a customer service environment.
  • Experience with ESXi and VMWare virtual environments. Removed from above section as redundant.
